When Hillary Clinton was Secretary of State, her popularity was at an all time high of 65%. The American public approved of her accomplishments and respected her work ethic. That popularity took a nose dive to 44 percent, however, when she decided to run for President.
Chastised for being too ambitious, it became obvious that Hillary crossed the line. She wanted too much power. She was a woman after all, and when women display too much interest in getting ahead in their career, people disapprove.
Could this be why we don’t have a woman president? Think about it. The systemic gender bias and disruption to societal norms can’t be overlooked.
What’s it all about?
The reality is that for a woman, embracing one’s ambition is not for the feint of heart.
But why is it acceptable for a man to own his ambition and not a woman?
Challenges for ambitious women
Competing in a man’s world is challenging for even the most determined women. If they exhibit assertive behavior and declare their ambition, they are often scorned due to societal expectations and gender stereotypes.
This happens when your ambition becomes ‘too much’ for others. While there’s been significant but slow progress for women in the workplace, it’s time to start asking ourselves why some people still feel intimidated by a woman with clear, unapologetic ambition.
